How to Shut Off Your Water in an Emergency

1

Locate Your Main Shut-Off Valve

Usually found near the water meter (at the street), in the garage, or near the water heater. In Texas, it's often in a covered box near the curb.

2

Turn the Valve Clockwise

Use a wrench or shut-off key to turn the valve clockwise (right) until it stops. For ball valves, turn the handle perpendicular to the pipe.

3

Verify Water is Off

Open a faucet to confirm no water flows. If water continues, you may need to shut off at the meter (requires a meter key).

4

Call for Help

Contact your water utility if you can't locate or operate your shut-off. For water damage, call a restoration professional immediately.
